Introduction:
Teacher: Today we will be learning about "Who, What, When, Where, Why, How" about the Erie Canal, but before we start our exploration I think it is best to know where we are at on the map ( teacher pulls up google maps on smart board https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0099589,-78.8840075,14z ) Can anyone come up and point to where we are at on the map?
Student: Comes up and points to class location on map
Teacher: Does anyone know where the Erie Canal is? let me give you all a hint! Why is named Erie? What body of water is it named after?
Student: Lake Erie is named Erie. So it might have something to do with Lake Erie
Teacher: Let's find out. ( pull up map from below to look at)
During the Lesson:
Teacher: I will now be passing on a worksheet and you will need record Who, What, When Where, Why, How, About the Erie Canal. Please write Erie Canal in the middle of your worksheet. (see worksheet below)
What questions do you have about the Erie Canal using the 5 W's and the 1 how? Let's start with Who.
Student: Who built the Erie canal?
Teacher: Great question, how about the question for "what"?
Student: What is the Erie Canal?
Teacher: Excellent! Next who can ask a question using "When"?
Student: When was the Erie Canal built?
Teacher: Good Job! Using the question word "why" who what question can we ask with it?
Student: Why is the Erie Canal important?
Teacher: Good Question! Now who can ask the last question about the Erie Canal using the question word "how"?
Student: How did the Erie Canal came to be?
Teacher: Now let's watch a short video on the Erie Canal to know what it is all about (Teacher puts on video see video below lesson plan)
Student: Student watch video clip about the Erie Canal.
End of Lesson:
Teacher: Now what did all of you learn about from the Erie Canal and would anyone like to answer the questions we came up with using the 5w's and the 1 How?
Student: Student answers questions.
Teacher: Would you like to go on a boat and go through the locks just like the girl did in the video with her family as a class trip on the Erie canal?
Students: Excited about going on the boat.
Teacher: Before we go on the class trip we will need to learn more about what the Erie Canal does, and how important it was to our history here in buffalo. Please put your worksheets in your new unit folder for the Erie Canal.
