Students will understand that…
• What are the big ideas? What understandings about them are desired?
Students will be able to understand the significance of the Erie Canal to New York State
By understanding:
- What it is( facts and field trip)?
- How it was used (in class activity and field trip)?
- Culture that fostered the Erie Canal life ("Low Bridge" Song)
Essential Questions:
• What provocative questions will foster inquiry and understanding?
What is the geographic significance of the Erie Canal?
What is the historic significance of the Erie Canal?
What are the contribution from the Erie Canal that contributed to local NY state economy as well as the United States economy?
What is the science behind the function of the canal locks?
Students will be able to:
•What key skills will students acquire as a result of this unit?
•What should they be able to do after the unit?
Students will be able to understand the geographic significance of the Erie Canal.
Students will be able to understand the historic significance of the Erie Canal.
Students will be able to identify the types of economical contributions the Erie Canal made to Local New York state's economy as well as to the United States economy.
Students will be able to understand the science behind the functions of the canal locks.

Summary of Learning Activities:
What learning experiences and instruction will enable students to achieve the desired results?
* Students will experience the visual aspect of the Erie Canal through various maps that are shown.
* Students will experience different roles or jobs that were needed during the use of the Eire Canal and experience how the process of shipping goods worked and the different jobs that were needed to run the Erie Canal.
* Student will experience the cultural aspect of the Eire Canal through understanding the lyrics of the song Low Bridge and sing it as well.
* Students will visit the Erie Canal and take photos of their experiences bring photos back to class and create a collage.
